Keeping Promises to Yourself

by Kelly on January 5, 2010

One of my hopes is that my website will help people increase their self-confidence and sense of self-worth.  One of the ways we can do that is by keeping the promises we make to ourselves.  So stop for a minute and ask yourself…  Can you really count on yourself???

I joined Connie Ragen Green’s 30 Day Power Blogging Challenge knowing that it would be a stretch for me.  Boy, was I right!  I am a little bit behind but I am determined to catch up so that I can keep that promise I made to myself.  I haven’t always been so good at keeping my promises to myself.  I remember how bad that felt… the disappointment, the embarrassment, the mean words I’d say to myself.  It would always be the beginning of a downward spiral.

So I’ve found that the trick for me is baby steps.  If I kept one small promise to myself, I could stick that success in my pocket and it would make keeping the next promise easier.  Sure, I still slip up now and then (which is a great opportunity to practice self-forgiveness instead of self-abuse).  Every moment is a new start.  Put your successes in your pocket and then let the rest go…

I invite you to think about how this applies to your life.  You could relate it to your pole dancing goals or any other area of your life.  Sometimes promises are kept in one are of your life but not in others.  Look around.  Where do you need to have more integrity with yourself?  No matter where you are on this journey, I KNOW you can do it!  It just takes one baby step toward feeling better about yourself to start a snowball effect.  I have faith in you and I am proud of you!

As for me, the blogging challenge is going to be a success for me to keep in my pocket.  Because of my choices, it will be something that builds me up instead of tearing me down.  I choose to keep this promise to myself!

What are your thoughts???

Keeping promises to ourselves is a challenge because we don’t honor ourselves enough. It is much easier for me to keep a promise to someone else. Knowing this about myself, I often will make a promise to someone I trust, someone who will keep me accountable, so that I can keep it for myself also. Not sure if this is cheating, but it gets the job done! :-)

I love both ideas… counting successes and telling others.

Where do you need to have more integrity with yourself? -Love this thought for today. Thanks
